Cyprus in May: Extreme drought puts a strain on the environment

Cyprus is currently experiencing a severe drought. Only 1% of the usual rain fell in March, and it remained extremely dry in April and May. Water reserves are shrinking, agriculture is suffering from crop failures and the first measures for water rationalization are on the horizon.

Environmentalists warn of the long-term consequences of climate change, while the government prepares emergency plans. The summer of 2025 in particular could be one of the hottest and driest in recent decades.
