Cyprus is home to over one million people and almost as many cats. A virus has been circulating among cats for half a year. Der Virus ist besonders aggressiv, endet meist tödlich und wird als Peritonitis (FIP) bezeichnet. Triggered by the coronavirus, more than 300,000 cats have already died. The problem lies in the treatment, because this therapy is possible with an antiviral tablet GS-441524 or with the preparation Molnupiravir. The therapy costs are very high, ranging from 3,000 to 7,000 euros.
The symptoms of this disease in cats are fever, aggressiveness, as well as swelling of the abdomen. The virus is transmitted via the smallest fecal particles and via nasal or salivary secretions. Since a large part is stray cats, they are particularly susceptible to disease and have a weakened immune system. Therefore, most cats will not survive this virus. The virus is not transmissible to humans.
Despite this bad news, there are still very kind people on the island who take care of the cats and provide food and water daily.
