Turtles are an important species in Cyprus, especially the green sea turtle (Chelonia mydas) and the hawksbill or loggerhead turtle (Caretta caretta). Both species live in the Mediterranean and are endangered, so their protection is paramount.
Green sea turtles prefer shallow water areas and are found throughout the island, especially in Latchi Bay. Hawksbill or loggerhead turtles are somewhat rarer and live mainly on the beaches in the northwest of the island, such as Lara Bay.
It is important that visitors and locals respect and protect the habitats and breeding grounds of these turtles. This means keeping the beach free of trash, not building fires on the beaches, and not placing lounge chairs or umbrellas in breeding areas.
In Cyprus there are numerous organizations and projects for the protection of turtles, such as the “Marine Turtle Conservation Project”. Visitors can also take guided tours to learn more about these fascinating animals and how to help protect them.
